“CBD is exploding in popularity”
“It seems that every corner store you walk into is selling a CBD something or other.”
These are the words of Nick Jikomes, a neuroscientist at the popular Seattle based cannabis information site, Leafly. But it doesn’t take a neuroscientist to understand why to use Canibidol and slowly more people are becoming interested. In the U.S. alone, a recent poll found 14% of Americans use CBD products, and the CBD market is expected to be well north of $20 billion by 2024.
With growing interest and awareness in the direction of the CBD industry you have the emergence of more and more opinions. You have people that will come to you and say it’s a placebo and does nothing, while others will preach CBD like it can cure COVID-19.
What is it though?
Studies have come a long way since a UK research firm tried to gather preliminary data and could only come up with a small stack. Today there are many, many more studies showing its benefits. Hundreds of prominent papers originate in North America alone. As a research community we are beginning to dive deep into this tiny super compound that has shown promise in working with multiple molecular pathways (as much as 65?) in the human body.
Some of the conditions currently being treated with CBD in clinical trials include:
– Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
– Chronic pain
– Parkinson’s disease
– Drug and alcohol addiction
CBD can work for you in a variety of ways depending on the result you are hoping to achieve combined with your personal body chemistry and overall health. It can be applied topically to irritated areas, it can be ingested and processed by the digestive system and it can even be consumed through vaporization. There are a multitude of ways to get your CBD fix. Studies show that CBD is actually absorbed faster through our gums rather than our digestive system which makes Flow CBD a seamless solution. Take a couple drops before you get your day started or add some drops to your tea before bed.
It’s important to know that over time your body builds tolerance to CBD, as a result most users take it twice a day and if need be the dose is increased. And with that it needs to be made clear that CBD does not make you feel any “high”. This sometimes causes the illusion that this wonder compound is actually just a placebo but over time we’ve come to learn the opposite. In fact, in 2018 the FDA approved the 1st cannabidol prescription medication, Epideolex. (Check out our blog here about Epideolex and Flow CBD) But the fact still remains that many people take CBD and instantly feel the effects. So it really does depend on your body type and with more research being done we will discover more and more benefits of this cannabinoid. It is just a matter of time.
CBD reduces inflammation and over the course of history we tend to stick close to supplements that provide us anti-inflammatory effects such as turmeric, fish oils and ginger. Anti-inflammatory properties of CBD help deal with pain management and this has led to CBD oil becoming a staple in the medical regimens of pro athletes like FIFA World Cup Champion Megan Rapinoe and Superbowl Champion Rob Gronkowski. But the benefits can also be as basic as providing clearer skin for Netflix Champions like myself. CBD pulls this off by preventing the overproduction of sebum in our sebaceous glands and inhibiting inflammatory cytokines.
A month long study of 47 people with Multiple Sclerosis was conducted to examine the effects of taking the internationally approved CBD prescription, Sativex. The participants experienced improvements in pain, walking, and muscle spasms. Another small study of 58 people with Rheumatoid Arthritis found that Sativex significantly improved pain during both movement and rest, as well as overall sleep quality.
Studying CBD’s interactions with our serotonin receptors shows promise in helping regulate our mood. It therefore offers an adjunctive or even a natural substitute to the many synthetic pills used to combat mental health illnesses. We don’t need a reminder about the negative impact of some of those medications.
In one Brazilian study, 57 men received either oral CBD or a placebo just 90 minutes before they underwent a simulated public speaking test. The researchers found that a 300-mg dose of CBD was the most effective at significantly reducing anxiousness during the test.
CBD also has shown benefits in lessening the detriment of chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting which are some of the common side effects of the treatment. In regards to cancer itself CBD has shown very early signs of optimism in animals, where it seemed to inhibit the spread of aggressive breast cancer in mice. Another study done in vitro (test tube trials) was even able to induce cell death in human breast cancer cells with higher concentrations of CBD.
But wait there’s more…
CBD even has positive effects on those with hypertension. Not only has it been shown to reduce resting blood pressure but it’s ability to help with anxiety and stress means people can potentially navigate a normally tense situations without feeling overwhelmed and defeated.
CBD is wonderful once you find the perfect dose. But understand that identifying the perfect dose for optimal results comes with time. Presently, Flow CBD offers 500mg, 1000mg and 3000mg doses. We recommend starting small and working your way up to your sweet spot. Personally I use 1000mg of Flow CBD. 1mL in the morning and 1mL before bed and this helps me battle my seizure disorder and get to sleep within minutes. I have had incredible results and have been seizure free for over a year since implementing CBD to my diet. Flow CBD customers have also shown significant improvements to their own quality of life and have provided fantastic feedback that you can find on our socials.
Whether it’s reducing the chronic effects of chemotherapy and epilepsy to merely reducing acne and being stress free, CBD has a role in our daily regime. But it is essential to perform your due diligence when looking to buy it over the counter. The main issue with OTC Cannibidol in the past has been the THC and CBD content listed on the label does not always reflect the actual doses in the bottle. Flow CBD guarantees these doses as our CBD is lab tested and THC free.
If you do decide to add this to your life the most important thing to remember is that people come in different shapes, sizes and situations so CBD should always be brought to your healthcare professional before being brought to your kitchen.
